STEPS researchers present at Naturvårdsverket's Plastbubbel

On 26th January, Naturvårdsverket organised a one day conference highlighting research and activities within the plastics sector . The event is occurring yearly, and focuses on what is happening in Sweden. With presentations, panel debates and talks it offers opportunities to network and share research and plastic projects.

STEPS researchers contributed with two talks.

• Fredric Bauer, Associate senior lecturer, Environmental and Energy Systems Studies, Lund University, presented research on fossil dinosaurs, highlighting how international plastics and chemical companies are fighting back when the rest of the industry is restructuring for a green transition. Instead of green investments in recycling or biobased plastics, new investments are being made to expand fossil-based activities. His talk starts at: 4:06:46 in the recording from the event.

• PhD-student, Oliver Englund, presented research on biotechnological production routes to produce protocatechuic acid and adipic acid from biobased substrates. These chemicals can be used to develop polyester plastics. He is based at the Biotechnology department at Lund University. His talk starts at 6:19:28 in the recording from the event.
